Jamaica, South Africa, and Colombia – The Top 3 Finalists

Ms. South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters won the title of Ms. Universe followed by  Ms. Colombia, Laura Gonzales (1^st runner-up) and Ms. Jamaica (2^nd runner-up).  Ms. Japan won the Best National Costume.Ms. Universe is an international event but, Filipinos are owning it! The Philippines is known to be the most enthusiastic nation when it comes to Ms. Universe.  The time Ms. Philippines comes out of the stage and gets the loudest cheers tells it all.  Though Ms. Philippines made it only to the top 10, at the end of the day, Filipinos will still be proud and be rooting for their own.

It was a good competition considering the new format of the pageant.  The candidates were grouped into 3 regions and the Wildcard. There were 33 contestants from the Americas region, 27 contestants from the Europe region and 32 from Africa and the Asia Pacific region.  Four contestants from each region and four from the wildcard group were chosen to join the top 16.   It is a record-breaking event with the most joined event by 92 contestants.  The first time contestants were Ms. Cambodia, Ms. Laos, and Ms. Nepal.

They took the judgment of the contestants from not only the official judges but to getting votes from viewers through Miss Universe’s official website missuniverse.com and hashtags on tweeter.

Ms. Universe 2017 was held in Axis Theater located at the Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas. Harvey was caught saying how he had his first year in Las Vegas as the host of the event and reminded everyone how things went.  It is his third year of hosting it and looks like he is a favorite in spite of what happened.

Judges and Backstage Hosts

The backstage hosts were Ashley Graham (American model), Karson Kressley (TV personality, actor, and designer),  Lu Sierra (model, correspondent, actress, and choreographer),  and Rachel Platte (American singer and songwriter).  Some of their favorites from the first stage show were Colombia, Irish, Spain, Sweden, Zech Republic, Germany, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Guam, Ghana, and South Africa.

The judges were Farouk Shami (Palestinian-American businessman), Ross Matthews (American television personality), Megan Olivi (host of UFC Ultimate Insider), Jay Manuel ( TV Personality, renowned make-up artist, and entrepreneur),  Wendy Fitzwilliam ( Miss Trinidad & Tobago Universe 1998), and our very own Pia Wurtzbach (Ms. Universe 2015).

The Entertainment and Highlights

Fergie took the stage and rocked it by performing her single “A Little Work”  in the evening gown competition. Rachel Platten rendered her song “Broken Glass” which explains that as women, at some point we think that there’s a limit to how high we can go and that this ceiling is unbreakable. The performances were on point to women issues these days and really inspiring!  Baghdad’s story was featured.  They are back on the show after 45 years. Ms. Baghdad made some inspiring remarks how she represents all religions from her country.

Ms. Philippines had the biggest reaction when she was named first to be the wildcard.

“ As feminine as I am, I decided to pursue a career designed for men and now I am a Mechanical Engineer.  I also broke all the stereotypes because there has never been a Miss with such a career.  I became Miss Venezuela and now I am here representing Venezuela.  There is no need to imitate any men in order to be at their level. We are all created equal. With dedication and hard work, you can accomplish anything in life.”

• USA

“The journey to becoming a Scientist actually started at a young age.  I just fell in love into Chemistry because of my High School teacher.  That led me actually to my career at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. We have an ion. We create energy. Being someone who struggled with Math and fell in love with Science and being discouraged to believe that I could never be a Scientist is why I started the program.  I do interactive Science experiments and show the children that Science is fun, opens your imagination, and it’s everywhere.  And that’s why I encourage young girls to discover their passion for science, and passion for discovery.”

“The ocean has a calming effect on me.  Being in the water, you have to surrender yourself to the ocean. When you catch your first wave, you just feel so victorious.  Ever since I was a kid, we’ve always lived close to a beach. We’ve always wakeboarding, scuba diving. That’s just something that’s been embedded in me.  Recently, I just opened my Coffee shop in the Philippines and I’m so proud.  I feel like I’ve grown into a new woman since starting this business.  And hopefully, that inspires people to have a goal and work towards that goal.”

“One of the strongest lessons I learned is how powerful women can be when they set their minds to something.  There are a number of challenging moments in everybody’s life. One time when I thought I might fail my Engineering degree.  It is not a walk in the park and I was balancing that with a full-time job and there were number of times in that program where I wanted to call it quits.  The important thing is to look at the end goal and see where you will end up at the end of it.”

“After my crowning, I was hijacked and held at a gunpoint.  I held my hands up, get out of the car, gave them my car keys, gave them my phone and try to run away.  But the guy pulled me back and pushed me back in the car telling me, get in, you’re going with us.  I took a chance and punched him in his throat.  I managed to run away. I was able to go to a safe place.  As a survivor, I was able to launch Unbreakable.  My campaign consisted of getting special fields together to equip women with the necessary skills and knowledge to empower themselves.  This was a dramatic experience and really a bad experience.  I won’t allow myself to be a victim.”

“When you’re a kid, you don’t really understand how other kids make fun of you. I didn’t like being tall and now, I realize how privileged I am to be this tall because it allowed me to play basketball.  I have been working in schools, tell them about my experience with bullying and how I overcame it really, focused and discipline. It’s been wonderful, I follow my dreams. I became who I am today through basketball, through sports.  I think we need to focus on what unites us and not on what makes us apart and different.”

“I was born in a very humble Brazilian state that is called Piaua. My family is really really big and it’s a very warm family, very receptive.  One of the things I like to do is to motivate people mainly young people and black children to accept themselves and to accept your beauty. No one is the same as anyone and we need to respect that. Because I’m different, you’re different, we are all different.”

“My family is my team.  My mom, my dad and granny are those who want me to make my dream come true. When I was a little girl, I was bullied.  I was the fat girl of my classroom.  I was hurt a lot.  But it showed me how to be strong and how to look into people’s  soul.  If I told the girl I was years ago that this would happen, she wouldn’t believe me.  I showed that girl that she could do anything with fashion and with love.”

“A special time, you share everything and that sort of represent the Thai people.  We are very caring and sharing.  When I finished my master’s degree in Marketing, it was a time in my life I didn’t have anything planned out for me anymore. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I didn’t know who I was. I think though, being that lost, it made me find myself and made me realize what I wanted to do and that’s why I was here. And I think I can actually make a difference in the sense of a teenage pregnancy.  There’s sort of stigma when it comes to teenage pregnant women, so young girls who get pregnant are shunned from society.  I want to get them back to studying and pursuing their dreams. “

“I was really excited.  You should really see it.  The magnitude of our landscape, we are very authentic in whatever things we do and what we bring to the plate.  I am in the process of learning sign language.  You know, it is really hard for them not to be able to get the same opportunities or they treat them less because they have a disability or they are different.  I’m in the process of building a sign language especially to break the barriers of communication between persons of a deaf society and persons of the hearing counterpart.”

Q:  Women make up the 49% of the global workplace, what do you believe is the most important issue facing women in the workplace today, and why?

A:  “In some places women get paid 75% of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours and I do not believe that is right.  I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world.”

• Venezuela

Q: Social Media has become a prominent factor in the way we perceive one another. Do you believe social media has had a positive or negative effect on the way we judge beauty?

A: “The social media is what we make of them. We must use social media in a positive way and take away criticisms.  Behind every photo, every social media account, there is a good person, a human who can and we all deserve respect.”

Q:  What do you think has been the most important social movement of your generation and why?

A: “ I think the most social movement so far is that we’re having an aging population but, so the most important movement in my time is definitely the youth.  The youth is the new future.  The youth is something we have to invest in because they are the ones who are going to look after the earth we live in.”

Q:  Sexual harassment has been at the forefront of recent headlines, why is it important for men and women to work together in tackling this issue?

A:  Sexual harassment is a form of abuse and no abuse should be tolerated whether in the workplace or in society.  I believe that men and women should come together and be professional.  Leave this act alone.  And, anything that happens such as sexual harassment should be taken into the law and should be dealt with.

• Colombia

Q:  Terrorism is one of the main threats facing our world today.  As Miss Universe, you will lead discussions on current issues with communities all over the globe. How would you go about explaining Terrorism to a child?

A:  I have never been a victim or a family member of terrorism.  I can not really explain how it is to be one of them.  But if I had the opportunity to speak to a child, I would tell them that, please, your generation and my generation, we cannot be full of weapons, please, more books, more culture, more friendship, more love.

Q:  What quality in yourself are you most proud of and how will you apply that quality to your time as Ms. Universe?

• Jamaica

The most quality that I’m most appreciative of is my drive.  My determination. I am the founder of a foundation that speaks awareness for the deaf community.  And, this platform is a great platform to just let persons know that these persons need opportunities and need equal opportunities as equals in society.  So this Ms. Universe platform will be the platform for me to use this foundation to spread awareness for all the deaf people around.

• Colombia

I am incredibly passionate about everything I do. With compassion, I have discipline.  With compassion, I put myself in every situation I work at.  I’ve done this as an actress.  I’ve done this as Ms. Colombia. I do not doubt that I would do this as Ms. Universe.

• South Africa

As Ms. Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual.  And Ms. Universe is a woman that has overcome many fears and by that, she’s able to help other women overcome their fears.  She’s a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for and I think that is exactly who I am.

Ms. Universe 2017 – Top 3 – Colombia, Haiti, and France

Ms. France was crowned Ms. Universe 2017 in the Philippines.  Ms. Haiti was first runner-up and Ms. Colombia came in as 2^nd runner-up.

When and where was it held?

The Philippines couldn’t be prouder to have hosted the 66^th Ms. Universe 2017 on January 29^th, 2017. Other years that were hosted by the Philippines were 1974-23^rd edition, and 1994 – 43^rd edition.

Who were the hosts?

Steve Harvey was the main host, despite the controversy of introducing the wrong winner last year. Ashley Graham served as the backstage host.  Steve and Pia Wurtzbach made some funny moments when she offered Steve a pair of glasses to read the final results.  Steve made some funny gestures and had said “Listen to me, sir, this got to be right, okay?”  after he was given the card for the final result.

Who were the judges?

Dayanara Torres, former Miss Universe from Puerto Rico; Sushmita Sen, first ever Miss Universe from India; Leila Lopes, first Miss Universe from Angola; Mickey Boardman, editorial director of PAPER magazine; Cynthia Bailey, founder of The Bailey Agency School of Fashion; and Francine LeFrak, Tony award-winning producer, social entrepreneur and women’s empowerment activist.  Mickey Boardman was asked in the beginning who were his favorite candidates and he named Canada, France,  Brazil, and the Philippines.  Ms. Cynthia Bailey named Haiti, France, and Canada.

Who made it to the TOP 9 and what did they have to say about themselves?

USA – She was a captain in the US army when she competed for Ms. USA.  At that time she won, her mom was in a hospice fighting against lung cancer.

Thailand – As a young girl, she helped her mom who was a cleaner.  She spent most of her time growing up helping her family to get by.  She had to earn money early and she learned the value of it because she always knew what it was like to have no money.  She wants to dedicate her life helping the poor people.

France – She had always loved Paris and its history.  She talked about how France has the best cuisine in the world.  She learned a lot of cooking from her mom.  She is currently taking up Dentistry because she realized how her dentist had to work a lot on her teeth when she was a kid and that made her want to do the same for others.

Mexico – She loves everything about Mexico, the rich culture, the people and the foods.  As a Latina, she loves singing and dancing.  Her family is what is most important to her.  She did not win the first time she competed for Ms. Mexico but had persevered to win the title the next time,  which led her to represent her country in the Ms. Universe 2017.

Kenya–  She was very proud and honored to represent her country of 42 tribes.  She said, if she was to become Ms. Universe she would tell the women of the world to believe in themselves, that in every height or every shape they maybe, they should be confident in who they are.  That they should not be defined by what they wear, who they date, and with their material wealth.  She said, that whatever makes a woman complete is knowing what she can achieve and that there are no limitations in whatever she may want to be.

Colombia – She loves being with people.  She is passionate about life.  She laughs and plays with everybody.  She added that she particularly loves being with the children.  She loves to see their growth, the many opportunities that await them.  She believes that if everyone has an education, we will all have a brighter future.

Canada – She is a law student at the University of Saskatchewan.  She wanted to be an advocate for others.  In 2009, her family lost their house from a fire.  She realized how they were very focused on their possessions rather than the people they have in their lives.  She then volunteered for Red Cross and had the opportunity to help on a greater scale.  After 2 weeks of losing their home, she had the opportunity to be in the Ms. Teen Sakatchewan and won it.  That experience served as her platform to achieve her dreams.

Haiti – She witnessed her grandmothers go blind because of glaucoma.  She realized that she may have had acquired the same sickness so she decided to take up a course in Optometry.  She is working on a project on the regeneration of the optic nerve to cure blindness.  She claims that Haitian women are strong and resilient, always ready to get back on their feet and accomplish their goals.

Philippines – She is a simple girl that grew up in her grandma’s house.  She claimed that they never owned a house and she realized how she wanted a good space, so she went on to get a degree in Interior Design to fulfill her dream.  She believes that creating a space impacts how we feel, how we work, and how we deal with our lives.

Q:  What is the most significant change you have seen in the world in the last 10 years.

A: In the last 10 years of being here in the world, I saw all the people bringing in one event like this in Ms. Universe. And it’s something big to us…that we are one nation…we are all one.

Kenya

Q: Now arguably, no US president has had more active 10 days in office.  What are you most excited about and what concerns you when it comes to the presidency of Donald Trump?

A: Politics is — okay, let me just start again. Donald Trump having been elected
as president of the United States may not have been the choice of many people living in the United States because of a divided support system for the outgoing president Barack Obama, who was supporting an upcoming woman president who was supposed to be a woman president, Hillary Clinton. So many people opposed his position. But I feel that once he took up his position he was able to unify the entire nation. Thank you very much. Thailand

Q: Name a current or past leader whom you admire and why?

A: For me, that would be the King of Thailand. His majesty had been working tirelessly on behalf of the Thai people since I was born. For all the Thai people, the king has been like a father to us.

France

Q:  Given today’s refugee crisis, do countries in the world has an obligation to accept refugees or do they have the right to close their borders?

A: So the countries should have the right to open or close their borders.  So, throughout the world, people can choose to have their borders open or closed.  In Europe, we have open borders.  In France, we want to have the most globalization that we can.  We want to have the biggest exchange of people that we can.  Maybe someday that will change, but now we have open borders.  So having open borders allows us to travel through the world and find out more about what’s out there in the world.

Haiti

Q: On June 21^st, an estimate 4.8 million people marched worldwide for human rights and other issues.  If you were able to participate, what would you have been marching for?

A: Hello, everybody.  One of the women I admire in the world is Eliana Wuzel because she fought so much for human rights.  I feel that’s what we need in the world.  We are just one.  100,000 years ago six species of humans lived in the world.  Now we are just one.  And we all need each other and we need to respect each other.

Colombia

Q: Why do you believe that violence is so prevalent in today’s society and what would we do about it?

A: I come from a country that does have violence, and this is my reference point.  And though there are presidents that don’t get along with each other, we work together to be able to unite, campaign, respect and inclusively, to be able to have social transformation to educate our children.

Ms. France was named Ms. Universe 2017. Pia, Ms. Universe 2016, from the Philippines is passing on the crown.

TOP 3 – Q & A

Final Question:

Name something over the course of your life that you failed at, and tell us what you learned from that experience.

Colombia – I think that many times, one makes mistakes for many things.  During moments when you may not accept someone due to their differences, to not accept them due to their sexual preferences, and to not be capable of accepting their error.  I think any of these experiences gives you the opportunity to have strength, value, and principle.

France – I have failed several times in my life.  So, I thought I failed the first time I went out on a casting because my name was not on the list.  And the very next day, I found that I was in a new book.  So I think, when you fail, you have to be elevated, and you have to try again, and you have to keep going.  If tonight I will not be one of the winners, I will have had the great honor of being one in the three finalists.  So for me, I failed before but, this is the first great opportunity.

Haiti – About 7 years ago, I survived an earthquake.  I feel like I was failing myself because I was not living my dreams.  I was living day by day that the earthquake was a bad event.  But, I chose to be a very positive person and learn a great lesson from it.  Because if I am here today, it is because I am living my dream.

Facts

If the United States is for Football, Canada is for Hockey, then Beauty Pageantry is for the Philippines.  I am not a beauty title winner, but I have been involved and have always been a follower of the majority of the beauty pageants, so you may want to consider my opinion about what I am going to tell.  It is pretty interesting to be involved in some of the beauty pageants held in the Philippines.

I got involved in many community projects where we tabulated scores for Beauty Pageants.  Here are some facts that you need to know about beauty pageants in the Philippines.

1. The majority of the organizations, whether community, school, business or government organizations have this program on their agenda.
2. Small kids, grown up kids, younger or older ones, gays, men or women are always part of these many beauty pageants.
3. The types of beauty pageants are popularity and beauty and brain contests.  Beauty and Brain contests define itself alone and they get funds from sponsors.
4. Popularity involves money for a cause. Candidates who are known for their beauty or qualifications are encouraged to join. Every candidate is asked to solicit/raise funds or sell tickets to sponsors and whoever comes out with the biggest fund or money collection is the winner.  Part of the money collected will be used for a project that was agreed upon.
5. Most pageantries that involve money set their own qualifications for the candidates and the right ones will be picked. A combination of both is also practiced.
6. Many festivals showcase or parade beauties on floats. Every Barangay (small community), town or city, establishments, organizations choose their muse to ride on floats.  In most cases, the winner of a Brain and Beauty contest in a town or city represents the town/city itself.
7. Most participants for Beauty Pageants have to spend for their own gowns, dress, makeup or anything they need to compete. Some have to personally reach out to their friends and relatives for financial support.
8. Like any game, these beauties have their followers who become their supporters.
9. When someone wins the crown for the first time, it just means that it boosts her credibility of joining higher level or more sophisticated pageants.
10. Some winners of a Brain and Beauty Pageantry from the town or city levels usually join the Ms. Universe Philippines or other nationwide Beauty Pageants.
11. Some just don’t give up joining regardless of losing many times because they want to get the main title with hopes to join the Ms. Universe which is the most grandiose title to win. Other titles that come next to Ms. Universe are Ms. International, Ms. World, and Ms. Earth. The winners of these titles represent the country in the international level competition.
12. Many big companies (private or government) support the national competition because they take pride in having the best of the best to represent the country in the worldwide level competition.
13. And yes, even gays have their small pageants and national pageants.

My Opinion on  the Culture

I won’t deny the fact that I enjoyed every pageant I worked with. They were all pretty entertaining. The loud fans from the crowd may be deafening but make every event remarkable. You can see that every transition of the event is exciting. In some pageants, talent is a part of the criteria and usually pre-judged before the crowning night.  Being a part of the tabulation team, what I get to see more of is the figures that each judge enters rather than what makes him/her enter the score. There were events when the judges just don’t agree on who should be the winner. But of course, at the end of it, whoever gets the highest score or favored more is the winner. One judge will say that he does not like the winner and another will say the other way around.  It is the final score that speaks for the real winner. Some followers say the judges were biased in their decision. Some factors that people say affects their decision are:  (Considered winner may be popular, has some influential followers, has connections to organizers and may have won titles from other beauty pageants prior.)  The score will speak for who is the winner, whether it was a biased judgment or not.  There may be a probability of pre-conceived agreement among the judges before they enter the scores to be tabulated.  As a follower and experienced score tabulator of beauty pageants, things may go wrong, but at the end of the day, I still look forward to watching more beauty pageants most especially the Ms. Universe pageant.   I like to see people rooting for their favorite candidate.

A niece who is fond of joining Beauty Pageants. – Win or lose! 🙂

I have 2 nieces (siblings) who are very much into these events. One was a candidate for Ms. Laoag City -2016, Philippines.  She did not win, but prior to joining Ms. Laoag City, she had joined some school pageants, inter-barangay pageants, and national school pageants. She had her moments of winnings and losings, but she continues to join when she gets recommendations. Her passion for this event is just enormous that her losses do not make her give up in joining whenever there are opportunities. She is very positive in her outlook and she says that it is the attitude of not giving up for her passion that makes her a winner.  Though there are adversities and hostilities in her losses, she says that she was not able to achieve her winnings if she gave up.  Another niece, for the first time,  just won first place for their school wide pageant. It is a match of popularity, brain and beauty contest. She was telling her big sister that she wanted the same path also. I don’t know if her decision to try joining also was her own decision or a pressure from peers or an influence from her sister.   At the end of the day, whether they are pressured or influenced by peers, friends, neighbors or relatives, they own the crown if they win it.  It is their highway to many more opportunities. Who knows?!?…. is all they wanted to say.

Usually, one major part of a Festival or Fiesta is the selection of a Muse for Coronation.  It is usually a popularity contest for most. They choose qualified candidates and each candidate has to solicit for money support or find sponsors.  Whoever has the highest sponsor will be crowned as Queen followed by the first princess, the second princess, and the third princess.  A Coronation Night is set to give honor to them. These types of event are highly political at times. Usually, politicians attend to give long speeches.
